Suncorp, a new corporation with limitedfunds, has been clearing large sections of the tropical Amazon forest forcattle ranching. This practice continues even though greater profits can bemade from rubber tapping, which does not destroy the forest, than from cattleranching, which does destroy the forest.

Which of the following, if true, most helpsto explain why Suncorp has been pursuing the less profitable of the twoeconomic activities mentioned above?
A The soil of the Amazon forest is very rich innutrients that areimportant in the development of grazing lands.B Cattle-ranching operations that are located intropical climates aremore profitable than cattle-ranching operations that are located incold-weather climates.C In certain districts, profits made from cattle ranching are moreheavily taxed than profits made from any other industry.D Some of the cattle that are raised on land cleared in the Amazon arekilled by wildcats.E The amount of money required to begin a rubber-tapping operation istwice as high as the amount needed to begin a cattle ranch.

Astronomer: Observations of the Shoemaker-Levi comet onits collision course with Jupiter showed that the comet broke into fragmentsbefore entering Jupiter's atmosphere in 1994, but they did not show how bigthose fragments were.  In hopes ofgaining some indication of the fragments' size, astronomers studiedspectrographic analyses of Jupiter's outer atmosphere.  These analyses revealed unprecedented tracesof sulfur after the fragments' entry. Thefragments themselves almost certainly contained no sulfur, but many astronomersbelieve that the cloud layer below Jupiter's outer atmosphere does containsulfur.  Since sulfur would haveseeped into the outer atmosphere if comet fragments had penetrated this cloudlayer, it is likely that some of thefragments were at least large enough to have passed through Jupiter's outeratmosphere without being burned up.

In the astronomer's argument, the two portions in boldface play which of the followingroles?

(A) The first presents a circumstance for which theastronomer offers an explanation; the second is part of that explanation.
(B) The first acknowledges a consideration that weighsagainst the conclusion of the argument; the second is that conclusion.
(C) The first acknowledges a consideration that weighsagainst the conclusion of the argument; the second provides evidence in supportof that conclusion.
(D) The first provides evidence in support of theconclusion of the argument; the second acknowledges a consideration that weighsagainst that conclusion.
(E) The first is a judgment advanced in support of theconclusion of the argument; the second is that conclusion.

Most of the world's supply of uranium currently comesfrom mines.  It is possible to extracturanium from seawater, but the cost of doing so is greater than the price thaturanium fetches on the world market. Therefore, until the cost of extracting uranium from seawater cansomehow be reduced, this method of obtaining uranium is unlikely to becommercially viable.
Which of the following would it be most useful todetermine in evaluating the argument?
(A) Whether the uranium in deposits on land is rapidlybeing depleted
(B) Whether most uranium is used near where it is mined
(C) Whether there are any technological advances thatshow promise of reducing the cost of extracting uranium from seawater
(D) Whether the total amount of uranium in seawater issignificantly greater than the total amount of uranium on land
(E) Whether uranium can be extracted from freshwater at acost similar to the cost of extracting it from seawater

第三部分是GWD题

A companyplans to develop a prototype weeding machine that uses cutting blades withoptical sensors and microprocessors that distinguish weeds from crop plants bydifferences in shade of color.  Theinventor of the machine claims that it will reduce labor costs by virtually eliminatingthe need for manual weeding.
Which ofthe following is a consideration in favor of the company’s implementing itsplan to develop the prototype?
A.   There is a considerable degree of variationin shade of color between weeds of different species.
B.   The shade of color of some plants tends tochange appreciably over the course of their growing season.
C.   When crops are weeded manually, overall sizeand leaf shape are taken into account in distinguishing crop plants from weeds.
D.   Selection and genetic manipulation allowplants of virtually any species to be economically bred to have a distinctiveshade of color without altering their other characteristics.
E.    Farm laborers who are responsible for themanual weeding of crops carry out other agricultural duties at times in thegrowing season when extensive weeding is not necessary.

Which ofthe following most logically completes the passage below?
Heavyrains during Centralia’scorn planting season prevented some farmers there from planting corn.  It is now the planting season for soybeans, another of Centralia’sprincipal crops, and those fields originally intended for corn are dry enoughfor planting.  Nonetheless, even thoughsoybean prices are unusually high at present, the farmers will leave most of thesefields empty rather than plant them with soybeans, since ‗‗‗‗‗‗.
A.   the extensive rains have led to an increasein the price of corn
B.   some Centralian farmers anticipate seriousfinancial losses due to the extremely wet spring planting season
C.   chemicals that were used to prepare thefields for corn planting would stunt the growth of soybeans
D.   the majority of Centralia’s corn farmers were able to plantcorn as they had intended, despite the wet planting season
E.    many Centralian farmers grow both corn andsoybeans

Until mow, only injectable vaccines against influenza have been available.  Parents are reluctant to subject children tothe pain of injections, but adults, who are at risk of serious complicationsfrom influenza, are commonly vaccinated. A new influenza vaccine, administered painlessly in a nasal spray, iseffective for children.  However, sincechildren seldom develop serious complications from influenza, no significantpublic health benefit would result from widespread vaccination of childrenusing the nasal spray.
Which ofthe following is an assumption on which the argument depends?
A.   Any person who has received the injectable vaccinecan safely receive the nasal-spray vaccine as well.
B.   The new vaccine uses the same mechanism toward off influenza as jnjectable vaccines do.
C.   The injectable vaccine is affordable for alladults.
D.   Adults do not contract influenza primarilyfrom children who have influenza.
E.    The nasal spray vaccine is mot effectivewhen administered to adults.
