114.
Normally, the pineal gland governs a person's sleep wake cycle by secreting melatonin inresponse to the daily cycle of light and darkness as detected by the eye.Nonetheless, many people who are totally blind due to lesions in the visualcortex of the brain easily maintain a 24-hour sleep-wake cycle. So the neuralpathway by which the pineal gland receives information from the eye probablydoes not pass through the visual cortex.
Forpurposes of evaluating the argument it would be most useful to establish whichof the following?
A Whether melatonin supplements help people whohave difficulty maintaining a 24-hour sleep cycle to establish such a pattern
B Whether the melatonin levels of most totallyblind people who successfully maintain a 24-hour sleep-wake cycle change inresponse to changes in exposure to light and darkness
C Whether melatonin is the only substancesecreted by the pineal gland
D Whether most people who do not have a 24-hoursleep-wake cycle nevertheless have a cycle of consistent duration
E Whether there are any people with normalvision whose melatonin levels respond abnormally to periods of light anddarkness

Scientists typically do their most creativework before the age of forty. It is commonly thought that this happens becauseaging by itself brings about a loss of creative capacity. However, studies showthat of scientists whoproduce highly creative work beyondthe age of forty, a disproportionately large number entered their field at an older age than is usual. Since by the ageof forty the large majority of scientists have been working in their field forat least fifteen years, the studies' finding strongly suggests that the realreason why scientists over forty rarely produce highly creative work is notthat they have aged but rather that scientists over forty have generally spent too long in their field.

When an airplane is taken out ofservice for maintenance, it is often repainted as well, and during therepainting no other maintenance work can be done on the plane.  In order to reduce maintenance time, airlineofficials are considering using a new nontoxic plastic film instead ofpaint.  The film takes just as long toapply as paint does, but many other maintenance tasks can be carried out at thesame time.
Which of the following, if true, isfurther evidence that using the film will help the airline officialsachieve their goal?
(A) Unlike paint, the film gives amilky tone to certain colors.
(B) At the end of its useful life, the film can be removed much more quickly than paint can.
(C) The film can be applied only bytechnicians who have received special training.
(D) The metal exteriors ofairplanes have to be protected from high temperatures and caustic chemicalssuch as exhaust gases.

During the past year, Pro-TectInsurance Company's total payout on car-theft claims has been larger than thecompany can afford to sustain. Pro-Tect cannot reduce the number ofcar-theft policies it carries, so it cannot protect itself against continuedlarge payouts that way. Therefore,Pro-Tect has decided to offer a discount to holders of car-theft policies whosecars have antitheft devices.  Manypolicyholders will respond to the discount by installing such devices, since the amount of the discount will within two yearstypically more than cover the cost of installation. Thus, becausecars with antitheft devices are rarely stolen, Pro-Tect's plan is likely toreduce its annual payouts.
In the argument above, the twoportions in boldface play which of the following roles?
(A) The first and the second areboth evidence offered by the argument as support for its main conclusion.
(B) The first presents a problem aresponse to which the argument assesses; the second is the judgment reached bythat assessment.
(C) The first is the position theargument seeks to establish; the second is a judgment the argument uses tosupport that position.
(D) The first is a development thatthe argument seeks to explain; the second is a prediction the argument makes insupport of the explanation it offers.
(E) The first presents adevelopment whose likely outcome is at issue in the argument; the second is ajudgment the argument uses in support of its conclusion about that outcome.

A theory is either true or false.Galileo’s observations of Jupiter’s satellites showed that the Ptolemaic theoryof the motion of celestial bodies is false. Therefore, since the Copernicantheory of planetary motion is inconsistent with the Ptolemaic account, Galileo’sobservations of Jupiter’s satellites proved the truth of the Copernican theory.
The argument above is open to theobjection that it makes the questionable assumption that
A.   Whoever first observedsomething inconsistent with the truth of the Ptolemaic theory should becredited with having proved that theory false.
B.   There are some possibleobservations that would be inconsistent with the account given by theCopernican theory but consistent with the account given by the Ptolemaictheory.
C.   The Ptolemaic andCopernican theories, being inconsistent, cannot both be based on exactly thesame evidence
D.   Numerous counterexampleswere necessary in order to show the Ptolemaic theory to be false
E.    The Ptolemaic andCopernican theories, being inconsistent, cannot both be false.

Aroca City currently funds itspublic schools through taxes on property. In place of this system, the cityplans to introduce a sales tax of three percent on all retail sales in thecity. Critics protest that three percent of current retail sales falls shortof the amount raised for schools by property taxes. The critics are correcton this point. Nevertheless, implementing the plan will probably not reduce themoney going to Aroca’s schools. Several large retailers have selected Aroca Cityas the site for huge new stores, and these are certain to draw large numbers ofshoppers from neighboring municipalities, where sales are taxed at rates of sixpercent and more. In consequence, retail sales in Aroca Cityare bound to increase substantially.
In the argument given, the two potions in boldface play which of the followingroles?
A.   The first is an objection that has beenraised against a certain plan; the second is a prediction that, if accurate, undermines the force of that objection.
B.   The first is a criticism, endorsed by theargument, of a funding plan; the second is a point the argument makes in favorof adopting a alternative plan.
C.   The first is a criticism, endorsed by theargument, of a funding plan; the second is the main reason cited by theargument for its endorsement of the criticism.
D.   The first is a claim that the argument seeksto refute; the second is the main point used by the argument to show that theclaim is false.
E.    The first is a claim that the argumentaccepts with certain reservations; the second presents that claim in arewarding that is not subject to those reservations.
