104.
TheaterCritic: The play La Finestrina, now at Central Theater, was written in Italy inthe eighteenth century. The director claims that this production is as similarto the original production as is possible in a modern theater. Although theactor who plays Harlequin the clown gives a performance very reminiscent of thetwentieth-century American comedian Groucho Marx, Marx's comic style was verymuch within the comic acting tradition that had begun in sixteenth-centuryItaly.
Theconsiderations given best serve as part of an argument that
A modern audiences would find it hard totolerate certain characteristics of a historically accurate performance of aneighteenth-century play
B Groucho Marx once performed the part of thecharacter Harlequin in La Finestrina
C in the United States the training of actorsin the twentieth century is based on principles that do not differ radicallyfrom those that underlay the training of actors in eighteenth-century Italy
D  theperformance of the actor who plays Harlequin in La Finestrina does not serve as
evidenceagainst the director's claim
E  thedirector of La Finestrina must have advised the actor who plays Harlequin tomodel his performance on comic performances of Groucho Marx

4.
Which of the following mostlogically completes the argument?
A new machine for harvesting cornwill allow rows to be planted only fifteen inches apart, instead of the usualthirty inches.  Corn planted this closelywill produce lower yields per plant. Nevertheless, the new machine will allow corn growers to double theirprofits per acre because __________.

(A) with the closer spacing of therows, the growing corn plants will quickly form a dense canopy of leaves, whichwill, by shading the ground, minimize the need for costly weed control and irrigation
(B) with the closer spacing of therows, corn plants will be forced to grow taller because of increasedcompetition for sunlight from neighboring corn plants
(C) with the larger number ofplants growing per acre, more fertilizer will be required
(D) with the spacing between rowscut by half, the number of plants grown per acre will almost double
(E) with the closer spacing of therows, the acreage on which corn is planted will be utilized much moreintensively than it was before, requiring more frequent fallow years in whichcorn fields are left unplanted

8.
Which of the following mostlogically completes the argument?
Utrania was formerly a majorpetroleum exporter, but in recent decades economic stagnation and restrictiveregulations inhibited investment in new oil fields.  In consequence, Utranian oil exports droppedsteadily as old fields became depleted. Utrania's currently improving economic situation, together withless-restrictive regulations, will undoubtedly result in the rapid developmentof new fields.  However, it would bepremature to conclude that the rapid development of new fields will result inhigher oil exports, because __________.
(A) the price of oil is expected toremain relatively stable over the next several years
(B) the improvement in the economicsituation in Utrania is expected to result in a dramatic increase in theproportion of Utranians who own automobiles
(C) most of the investment in newoil fields in Utrania is expected to come from foreign sources
(D) new technology is available torecover oil from old oil fields formerly regarded as depleted
(E) many of the new oil fields inUtrania are likely to be as productive as those that were developed during theperiod when Utrania was a major oil exporter

第三部分是GWD题

GWD-12-Q11: CR
Ingeneral, jobs are harder to get in times of economic recession because manybusinesses cut back operations.  However, any future recessions in Vargonia will probably not reduce the availability of teachingjobs at government-funded schools.  Thisis because Vargonia has just introduced a legal requirement that education ingovernment-funded schools be available, free of charge, to all Vargonianchildren regardless of the state of the economy, and that currentstudent-teacher ratios not be exceeded.
Which ofthe following, if true, most strengthens the argument?
A.   The current student-teacher ratio atVargonia’s government-funded schools is higher than it was during the mostrecent period of economic recession.
B.   During recent periods when the Vargonianeconomy has been strong, almost 25 percent of Vargonian children have attendedprivately funded schools, many of which charge substantial fees.
C.   Nearly 20 percent more teachers arecurrently employed in Vargonia’s government-funded schools than had beenemployed in those schools in the period before the last economic recession.
D.   Teachers in Vargonia’s government-fundedschools are well paid relative to teachers in most privately funded schools inVargonia, many of which rely heavily on part-time teachers.
E.    During the last economic recession inVargonia, the government permanently closed a number of the schools that it hadfunded.

GWD-24-40.CR
Scientists typically do their most creative work beforethe age of forty. It is commonly thought that this happens because aging byitself brings about a loss of creative capacity. However, studies show thata disproportionately large number of the scientists who produce highlycreative work beyond the age of forty entered their field at an older age thanis usual. Since by the age of forty the large majority of scientists havebeen working in their field for at least fifteen years, the studies’ findingstrongly suggests that the real reason why scientists over forty rarely producehighly creative work is not that they have simply aged but rather that theygenerally have spent too long in a given field.
In the argument given, the two portions in boldface playwhich of the following roles?
A.   The first is the position that the argumentas a whole opposes; the second is an objection that has been raised against aposition defended in the argument.
B.   the first is a claim that has been advancedin support of a position that the argument opposes; the second is a findingthat has been used in support of that position.
C.   The first is an explanation that theargument challenges; the second is a finding that has been used in support ofthat explanation.
D.   The first is an explanation that theargument challenges; the second is a finding on which that challenge is based.
E.    The first is an explanation that theargument defends; the second is a finding that has been used to challenge thatexplanation.
