From 1978 to 1988, beverage containers accounted for asteadily decreasing percentage of the total weight of household garbage in theUnited States.  The increasinglywidespread practice of recycling aluminum and glass was responsible for most ofthis decline.  However, although aluminumrecycling was more widely practiced in this period than glass recycling, it wasfound that the weight of glass bottles in household garbage declined by a greaterpercentage than the weight of aluminum cans.
Which of the following, if true of the United States inthe period 1978 to 1988, most helps to account for the finding?
(A) Glass bottles are significantly heavier than aluminumcans of comparable size.
(B) Recycled aluminum cans were almost all beveragecontainers, but a significant fraction of the recycled glass bottles hadcontained products other than beverages.
(C) Manufacturers replaced many glass bottles, but fewaluminum cans, with plastic containers.
(D) The total weight of glass bottles purchased byhouseholds increased at a slightly faster rate than the total weight ofaluminum cans.
(E) In many areas, glass bottles had to be sorted bycolor of the glass before being recycled, whereas aluminum cans required nosorting.

It is true of bothmen and women that those who marry as young adults live longer than those whonever marry.  This dose not show thatmarriage causes people to live longer, since, as compared with other people ofthe same age, young adults who are about to get married have fewer of theunhealthy habits that can cause a person to have a shorter life, most notablysmoking and immoderate drinking of alcohol.
Which of thefollowing, if true, most strengthens the argument above?
A.   Marriage tends to cause people to engageless regularly in sports that involve risk of bodily harm.
B.   A married person who has an unhealthy habitis more likely to give up that habit than a person with the same habit who isunmarried.
C.   A person who smokes is much more likely thana nonsmoker to marry a person who smokes at the time of marriage, and the sameis true for people who drink alcohol immoderately.
D.   Among people who marry as young adults, mostof those who give up an unhealthy habit after marriage do not resume the habitlater in life.

Scientists typicallydo their most creative work before the age of forty.  It is commonly thought that this happensbecause aging by itself brings about aloss of creative capacity.  However, studies show that a disproportionatelylarge number of the scientists who produce highly creative work beyond the ageof forty entered their field at an older age than is usual.  Since by the age of forty the large majorityof scientists have been working in their field for at least fifteen years, thestudies’ finding strongly suggests that the real reason why scientists overforty rarely produce highly creative work is not that they have simply aged butrather that they generally have spent too long in a given field.
In the argumentgiven, the two portions in boldfaceplay which of the following roles?
A.   The first is the position that the argumentas a whole opposes; the second is an objection that has been raised against aposition defended in the argument.
B.   The first is a claim that has been advancedin support of a position that the argument opposes; the second is a findingthat has been used in support of that position.
C.   The first is an explanation that theargument challenges; the second is a finding that has been used in support ofthat explanation.
D.   The first is an explanation that theargument challenges; the second is a finding on which that challenge is based.
E.    The first is an explanation that theargument defends; the second is a finding that has been used to challenge thatexplanation.
